OpenAI Is Just Facebook Now

The Atlantic - Technology

Investors led by Microsoft pressured OpenAI to reinstate Altman, which it did within days, alongside vague promises to be more responsible. Then, last month, the company disbanded the internal group tasked with safety research, known as the "superalignment team." Some of the team's most prominent members publicly resigned, including its head, Jan Leike, who posted on X that "over the past years, safety culture and processes have taken a backseat to shiny products." Fortune reported that OpenAI did not provide anywhere near the resources it had initially, publicly promised for safety research. Saunders, who also worked on superalignment, said he resigned when he "lost hope a few months before Jan did."

Inside the Chaos at OpenAI

The Atlantic - Technology

To truly understand the events of this past weekend--the shocking, sudden ousting of OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, arguably the avatar of the generative-AI revolution, followed by reports that the company was in talks to bring him back, and then yet another shocking revelation that he would start a new AI team at Microsoft instead--one must understand that OpenAI is not a technology company. It was founded in 2015 as a nonprofit dedicated to the creation of artificial general intelligence, or AGI, that should benefit "humanity as a whole." In this conception, OpenAI would operate more like a research facility or a think tank. The company's charter bluntly states that OpenAI's "primary fiduciary duty is to humanity," not to investors or even employees. In 2019, OpenAI launched a subsidiary with a "capped profit" model that could raise money, attract top talent, and inevitably build commercial products.

Product development has long been an elevated science with frameworks, rules and significant research work conducted to ensure the product in question is fit-for-market and valued for its price. But not every company is using the full suite of tools available to tap into the collective wisdom of the consumer base. Developing a product that can make or break your organization is too important to get wrong or approach without sufficient intelligence. Bizarre prototypes of military equipment are revealed in Ghana

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Footage has emerged showing bizarre prototypes of military contraptions during a parade in Ghana. A robot'walking tank' shaped like a pair of human legs and a giant armoured vehicle with leather seats inside were among the items on display at the event, said to have taken place in the capital, Accra. There were also people walking in military fatigue-coloured exoskeletons, in what appeared to be a product launch by manufacturer Kantanka. It is unclear whether the new products have any connection to the official Ghanaian military. Footage from the event shows the men in exoskeletons taking cumbersome steps in their heavy gear.
